(make)

A very personal homemaking philosophy

There are a few simple reasons I chose to be a homemaker. Kids, learning, living a little slower, seeing them grow.

There’s one that sums them all up. ‘Merica.

Homemaking and homeschooling lend support to the entire history of America. It’s all there was for anyone, but any education at all was for highly privileged people. People who could afford the time not earning an income (by their own labor), or people who weren’t strictly forbidden from acquiring certain knowledge.

Black slaves and freedmen alike were denied education at higher education establishments years after the Revolution; women longer. In fact, slaves all over the world have been denied education as a control mechanism…

Reading and learning are some old school forms of rebellion and such an inspiration.

So while I looove learning, its more than just following curricula to me—self education is vital. The desire to learn is vital.

Tedious af but necessary

Homemaking is another story. And a confession.

Like many, I like a tidy home. But I do not like cleaning.

Cleaning is the task you do to procrastinate paperwork. Cleaning is somehow both the solution and problem.

So I had to really force myself into any homemaking save for cooking—my advice would be to appeal to your personality. I’m an introvert but a real type A, what saved me was lists! A daily reminder list and “deep clean” tracker made a lot fall into place.

So we had a baby in 2013 (another long tale) and decided for ours and baby’s health to go organic. Herbalism did by far the most to aid my healing. 2 more kids in 2016 and 2019.

We’ve decided we needed to be more “from scratch”, to know what we were eating, where is came from, even the name of the farmer who grew it (Hi, Dave!).

The more we learned, the more it seemed we need to maybe just buy a time machine and move to an open field a century ago. Laughable for a number of reasons.

So we chose to bring the things from the past, both the home and the made, into the forefront of our lives.
